Mapping your Network Solutions domain to Placester

Katherine Ramirez Updated by Katherine Ramirez

This article will show you how to map your Network Solutions domain to your Placester website.

Mapping is the process of replacing your existing Placester domain with a custom one you have purchased from a third-party provider.  Placester always recommends that you map your domain rather than forward it.  To find out more about the difference between mapping and forwarding click here.

In order to take care of mapping your Network Solutions Domain to your Placester site, you will need to change both your A-Record (IP address) and CNAME (hosting platform) to Placester-specific settings.  The article on this page will walk you through this process.  If you run into any trouble, we recommend speaking with Network Solutions directly as it is their product.  You can reach them at 1-888-642-0129.

Having Network Solutions map your Domain

If you are going to have Network Solutions take care of Domain Mapping for you.  You will want to provide them with the following settings for pointing your site to Placester.

1. Forwarding: OFF

2. Nameservers: Set to DEFAULT

3. A-Record: 184.169.141.142

4. CNAME: domains.myrealestateplatform.com

Once this is completed move to the bottom of this article and follow the directions for your Placester site.

Mapping your Network Solutions Domain on your own

First, go to Network Solutions and log in to your account using the Manage Account option.

This brings you to a login screen that asks for your User ID and password.

If you're having trouble logging in and think you might need to reset your password, click I've forgotten my User ID or password or contact Network Solutions at 1-888-642-0129.

Account Manager

Once logged in, you'll see your Account Manager screen. Under My Domain Names, click Edit DNS.

Change Where Domain Points

This brings you to a page that shows where the domain is currently pointing. Click Change Where Domain Points.

Domain Pointing Options

Since you need to map your domain using DNS settings, choose the third option here, Advanced DNS.

Changing Your Nameservers

You might see a warning screen letting you know that you are changing your nameservers, which could interrupt service. If you were previously using a different website provider with the same domain, they might have mapped your domain to that website using nameservers. If you didn't set up an email address through that website provider, it's fine to move forward, change the nameservers and proceed to the advanced DNS settings.

If you did have email set up through your previous website provider, resetting the nameservers might interrupt your email service. If that is the case, please get in touch with your email provider to determine how to move forward with the Network Solutions default nameservers and mapping your email through MX records rather than nameservers. They should be able to help you with this.

Step 1: Change the A-Record

Scroll to the section labeled IP Address (A Records). The domain might have various A-Records when you log in. To Edit the A-Records, click Edit A-Records here:

For Network Solutions, we recommend setting 2 A-Records with the following information:

  • One with host: @
  • One with host: *
  • Both point to 184.169.141.142 for the Numeric IP
  • TTL can remain 7200 for both

If a numeric IP is entered next to the first record with the host of www, you should delete it unless you have something else set up with that A-Record. Delete it by checking off the Delete box to the far right before saving.

Once saved, these are the correct A-Records that you'll see back on the main DNS screen:

Step 2: Change the CName

Scroll to the section labeled Host Aliases (CNAME Records). There might not be a CName entered yet. Click Edit CNAME Records.

One CName needs to be added.

The CName should have the following information:

  • Alias: www
  • TTL: 7200
  • First radio button unchecked
  • Nothing selected from "Refers to Host Name" drop down
  • Other Host radio button selected
  • In Other Host, type: domains.myrealestateplatform.com

Save these settings so that you see this within the main DNS screen:

This is all that needs to be done within Network Solutions. When the changes are complete, log into Placester.com to complete the final step.

Adding your Network Solutions domain to Placester

On your dashboard, click on the three vertical dots and select Custom Domain. This will bring you to the Custom Domain slideout.

Custom Domain Slide Out

Within the custom domain slide out, add the custom domain that you're looking to use. Use only lowercase letters, and be sure to include “www” when adding in your URL. Example: www.placester.com

Add Domain, then click Save.

Network Solutions Support

Having trouble making the changes? Network Solutions has an online support page and phone support at 1-800-333-7680. We recommend getting in touch with them if you're encountering issues with changing the DNS settings on their platform.

Troubleshooting

If you've made all of these changes and are finding that your site still isn't loading, here are some potential causes:

1. Caching: You have a cached copy of the site on your browser. Try clearing your cache, using a new browser or testing the site on a mobile device.

2. Propagation: DNS adjustments take longer to propagate with certain domain registrars. We like to test and make sure everything has propagated using www.WhatsMyDNS.com.

3. Errors in Site Settings > Custom Domain: make sure that you included the www before the custom domain and you didn't use any capital letters. Otherwise, the site will not load.

Pro Tip: DNS Tools

Here are some DNS tools that we recommend:

- Use WhoIs.com to find out where a domain is registered and the status of a domain

- Use WhatsMyDNS.net to check the current DNS records of a domain
