Setting Up Redirects and Your 404 Page

A 301 redirect sends visitors and search engines from an old address to a new one. Your 404 page is the page visitors see when they open an address that does not exist on your site. You set up both, and the site-wide SEO details, in the site settings of Site Edit. Your changes go into a draft. Visitors see them after you publish.

Open the site settings

  1. Select Dashboard in the top menu.
  2. On the site card, select EDIT SITE. Site Edit opens with your homepage.
  3. Select Settings in the top bar, then select the Site tab.

The Settings panel on its Site tab

  1. Settings: Opens the Settings panel.
  2. Site: Shows the settings that apply to the whole site.

Scroll down the list to find 301 redirects, 404 page and SEO.

Add a redirect

  1. Select 301 redirects.
  2. Select Add item. A new redirect card opens.

A new redirect in 301 redirects

  1. Untitled card: The new redirect. Select its name to open or close it.
  2. Source Page/URL: The old address that visitors must not land on.
  3. Target Page/URL: The address that visitors go to instead.
  4. Remove: Deletes this redirect.

For each address, choose a page of your site in the Select… list, or type an address in the box under it. Type a full address that starts with https://, or a path on your site that starts with /, such as /old-listings.

To add another redirect, select Add item again. Use the arrows on a card to change its place in the list.

Fill in the boxes inside the card only. Do not use the extra Source Page/URL and Target Page/URL boxes that show under Add item.

Change your 404 page

Select ‹ next to the panel title to go back to the list, then select 404 page.

The 404 page settings

  1. Title: The heading of your 404 page.
  2. Edit content: Opens an editor for the text under the heading.
  3. Pick Image: Chooses the picture on the page from your Media Library.
  4. Remove: Takes the picture off the page.

Add site-wide SEO details

The SEO settings hold facts about your business. Search engines and AI tools read these facts from every page of your site. Go back to the list and select SEO.

The site-wide SEO settings

  1. Organization positioning statement: Two or more sentences that say what your business does.
  2. Year or date founded: The year, or the date, your business started.
  3. Award or recognition: An award your business won.
  4. Credential or designation: A credential or designation your business holds.
  5. Founder names: The founders, separated by commas.
  6. Number of employees or agents: A whole number.

Select ? next to a box to see more about it. Leave a box empty if it does not apply to you.

To change the search title and description of a page, including your homepage, see Page and Post SEO.

Publish your changes

Each change goes into your draft. The draft bar at the bottom of Site Edit shows the number of changed site settings, with Discard and Publish. Select Publish to make your changes live, or Discard to undo all of the draft.

For more about drafts, see Publishing and Discarding Drafts.
