Getting Started with Site Edit

Site Edit is where you change your website. It shows your site as visitors see it, and you edit it in place. Your changes go into a draft. Visitors see them only after you publish the draft.

  1. Go to the Placester sign-in page. The page shows Sign in to Placester.
  2. Type your Email and Password, then select SIGN IN. You can also select CONTINUE WITH GOOGLE, CONTINUE WITH FACEBOOK or CONTINUE WITH APPLE.
  3. If you forgot your password, select RESET next to FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD?.

After you sign in, the Sites page of your dashboard opens.

Open Site Edit

On the Sites page, each website has a card.

The site card on the Sites page

  1. EDIT SITE: Opens your site in Site Edit.

Select EDIT SITE. Site Edit opens with your homepage.

The Site Edit workspace

The top bar has the tools of Site Edit. The rest of the screen is the preview of your site.

The Site Edit workspace and its top bar

  1. Dashboard: Leaves Site Edit and goes back to your dashboard.
  2. Search: Finds a page, a module, a widget or a setting by name.
  3. Design: Opens the colors, fonts and layout of the whole site.
  4. Widgets: Shows the sidebar widgets of this page, and adds new ones.
  5. Pages: Lists your pages, blog posts and other content. Select one to open it.
  6. Add New: Adds a page, a blog post, a module or a widget.
  7. Settings: Opens the settings of this page and of the site.
  8. Ask AI: Opens the AI assistant.
  9. Share: Opens or shares the link to your live site.
  10. More: Opens more tools, such as the Legacy Customizer and domain mapping.
  11. Device preview: Shows the preview as a computer, a tablet or a phone shows it.

To change something on the page, move the pointer over it. A small toolbar appears. Select the toolbar button to open the controls of that part of the page. For more, see Editing Content on the Page.

Type a word in the search box at the top. The results show in groups: Widgets, Modules, Add New, Site settings and Pages.

Search results for the word contact

  1. Search: Type a word to search.
  2. Contact Details: One match. Select it to open that setting.

Some results, such as an on or off setting, have their control in the list. You can change them there.

Settings for this page, all pages or the site

Select Settings in the top bar. The Settings panel has tabs for the scope of the settings.

The Settings panel of a blog post

  1. This Blog Post: Settings of only the post you are looking at.
  2. All Blog Posts: Settings that apply to every blog post.
  3. Site: Settings of the whole site, such as contact details and the footer.

The first tab is named after what you are looking at. On a page it is This Page. On a blog post it is This Blog Post. A page has no "all" tab. A blog post has All Blog Posts.

Make sure you use the correct tab. A change on This Page changes only that page. To change something on every page, such as the contact details, use Site.

Preview on a phone or tablet

The device preview buttons are at the bottom of the preview.

The preview at phone size

  1. Desktop preview: Shows the site at computer size.
  2. Tablet preview: Shows the site at tablet size.
  3. Mobile preview: Shows the site at phone size.

The device preview changes only what you see in Site Edit. It does not change your site.

Share your site

Select Share in the top bar.

The Share menu

  1. Open live site: Opens the public site in a new tab.
  2. Copy site URL: Copies the link to your site.
  3. Share via email: Opens your mail app with the link in a new message.
  4. Social: Shares the link on Facebook, X, LinkedIn or Instagram.

Important: Share always shares your live site. It does not show your draft. Publish your draft first if you want people to see your latest changes.

More tools

Select More in the top bar.

The More menu

  1. Legacy Customizer: Opens the classic editor in a new tab.
  2. Map your domain: Connects your own domain name to the site.
  3. Request IDX: Starts a request to show MLS listings on your site.

The menu also has Manage agents, Manage offices, Buy now / upgrade and Have Placester finish my site.

Publish your changes

When you change something, the draft bar appears at the bottom of Site Edit. It shows the edits that wait, for example 1 page edit, with Discard and Publish. Select Publish to show your changes to visitors. Select Discard to remove all of the changes in the draft. For more, see Publishing and Discarding Drafts.
