Verifying Your Site with Google, Bing, and Pinterest

Some services ask you to prove that you own your site before they give you all of their tools. Each service gives you a short code. You paste the code into Site Edit Settings, and your site shows it to the service. Verification does not change how your site looks or how it ranks.

Get your code

Each service shows the code inside an HTML tag such as <meta name="google-site-verification" content="abc123..." />. You need only the text between the quotation marks after content=.

  • Google Search Console: Sign in at Google Search Console and add your site as a URL prefix property. Choose the HTML tag method and copy the code.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: Sign in at Bing Webmaster Tools and add your site. Choose the HTML meta tag method and copy the code.
  • Pinterest: In your Pinterest settings, claim your website. Choose the HTML tag method and copy the code.
  • Facebook: In Meta Business Settings, add your domain. Choose the meta tag method and copy the code.

The menus of these services change from time to time. If you cannot find the HTML tag, see the help pages of the service.

Open site verification

  1. Select Dashboard in the top menu.
  2. On the site card, select EDIT SITE. Site Edit opens with your homepage.
  3. Select Settings in the top bar.
  4. Select the Site tab, then scroll down the list to Site verification.

The Site tab of Settings

  1. Site: Settings that apply to the whole site.
  2. Site verification: The boxes for verification codes.

Select Site verification.

Paste your code

The Site verification panel

  1. Google Search Console: The code from Google Search Console.
  2. Bing Webmaster Tools: The code from Bing Webmaster Tools.
  3. Facebook: The code from Facebook.
  4. Pinterest: The code from Pinterest.

Paste the code into the box for its service, then select another box or press Tab. Fill in only the services you use.

These codes go into your draft. The draft bar at the bottom of the screen counts the site settings you changed, for example 1 site setting. Select Publish before you go back to the service. The service cannot see a code that is only in your draft. For more about the draft, see Publishing and Discarding Drafts.

Finish the verification

After you publish, go back to the service and select its Verify button. The service tells you if the verification worked. If it did not, check that you pasted only the code, with no quotation marks or spaces.
