Editing Your Navigation Menu

The navigation menu is the row of links at the top of every page of your website. In Site Edit you change it in the Edit Nav Bar panel. Your changes go into a draft. Visitors see them after you publish.

Open your menu

  1. Select Dashboard in the top menu.
  2. On the site card, select EDIT SITE. Site Edit opens with your homepage.
  3. Move the pointer over the menu at the top of your site. A small toolbar appears above it.

The menu with its toolbar in Site Edit

  1. Nav Bar: The menu at the top of every page of your site. Point at it to show its toolbar.
  2. Customize Nav Bar: Opens the Edit Nav Bar panel.

Select Customize Nav Bar. The Edit Nav Bar panel opens on the General tab.

Each link in the panel has a title, a Links to choice and a ⋯ button.

The General tab of the Edit Nav Bar panel

  1. Link 1 title: The words visitors see for this link. Type to change them.
  2. Links to: The page, post or address the link opens. Select it to choose another.
  3. Link 1 options: Opens the moves and Remove link for this link.
  4. ADD LINK: Adds a new link at the end of the menu.

To change where a link goes, select its Links to box. A list opens.

The Links to list

  1. Start typing…: Finds a page, post or link type by name.
  2. Custom URL: Links to any web address you type.

The list has three groups:

  • Action Links: Custom URL, Mail to (opens an email to an address), Phone to (calls a number) and Sign Up Form.
  • Pages: The pages of your site.
  • Blog Posts: The posts of your blog.

Select a choice. When you choose Custom URL, type the full address in the box that appears under it.

Drag a link by its handle (the dots at its left) to move it. Drop it onto another link to put it in that link's submenu. A link with a submenu shows a drop-down arrow on your site.

You can also use the ⋯ button of a link.

The options of a link

  1. Highlight: Makes this link stand out in the menu.
  2. Move down: Moves the link one place later in the menu.
  3. Move into submenu: Puts the link in the submenu of the link above it. Not available for the first link.
  4. Remove link: Takes the link out of the menu.

The same menu also has Move up and Move out of submenu. An option that does not apply to the link, such as Move up on the first link, is grey.

  1. Select ADD LINK. A new link appears at the end of the list.
  2. Type its title.
  3. Select its Links to box and choose where it goes.

To show a title on two lines, press Enter in the title box.

Publish your menu

Each change goes into your draft. The draft bar at the bottom of Site Edit shows Unpublished changes with Discard and Publish. Close the Edit Nav Bar panel, then select Publish to show the new menu to visitors, or Discard to undo all of the draft.

For more about drafts, see Publishing and Discarding Drafts.
