Organizing Blog Posts with Categories

Using the Legacy Customizer? Legacy Customizer steps

Categories put your blog posts into groups, such as Buyers or Sellers. A post can be in more than one category. A blog page can list all of your posts, or only the posts of some categories.

Put a post in a category

  1. In Site Edit, select Pages in the top bar.
  2. Select Blog Posts, then select the post. The post opens, with the Edit Blog Post panel.
  3. Select the Categories tab.

The Categories tab of a blog post

  1. Categories: Shows the categories of this post.
  2. Search: Finds a category by name.
  3. Category: Select the box to put the post in this category. Clear it to take the post out.

Select the box of each category you want. The change goes into your draft. Select Publish on the draft bar to show it on your site. Discard removes it.

You can also open these categories from Settings, then This Blog Post, then Categories.

You cannot add a new category here

Site Edit lists only the categories that your site already has. If you type a name that is not a category, the list shows No matches. There is no choice to create the category.

The category search with no matches

  1. Search: A name that is not a category gives No matches. There is no choice to create it.

Site Edit cannot create a new category. Use the categories your site has.

Choose the categories a blog page shows

A blog posts index page lists your posts. By default it lists all of them. You can make it list only the posts of some categories.

  1. Select Pages in the top bar, then select your blog page. Its type is Blog Posts Index Page.
  2. Select Settings in the top bar.
  3. On This Page, select the Categories tab.

The Categories tab of a blog posts index page

  1. Categories: The categories of posts this page lists.
  2. Select Categories: Select one or more categories to list only their posts.

Select the categories, then publish the draft.

Add another blog page

You can add a second blog page, for example a page for posts for buyers only. Then choose its categories as shown above.

Select Add New in the top bar.

The Add New panel

  1. Blog Posts Index: Adds a new page that lists your blog posts.
  2. Add to header menu: Also adds the new page to your menu.

For more about new pages, see Creating a New Page. For more about blog posts, see Editing an Existing Blog Post.
